As Belize City crime investigators try to find Leon Beeks’ killers, another team of police officers is working on a homicide that occurred nineteen hours earlier, also on the city’s southside. The victim, is twenty four year old Edgar Seguro a father of four who was simply doing breadwinner duties when he got caught in a deadly part of town. Jacqueline Godwin has more.

Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
Twenty four year old Edgar Seguro was a basic grade security officer at the Belize Central Prison.

Roselia Torres, Common-law Wife
“This is so hard. I don’t know why they have to do these things because he didn’t deserve it. He was a loving person. He was a family man and my baby just turned six months and whenever he is not around, he doesn’t go to sleep.”

The homicide is a real tragedy as information reaching 7NEWS suggests that the young father was not the intended target but was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Seguro, who was in his cycling outfit, was leaning against his bike outside of this small wooden shop where he had stopped on Oleander Street to buy bread. That’s when a person described only as a red skin man wearing a dark color short pants and camouflage jacket rode past and fired several shots in his direction.

Roselia Torres says she heard the gunshots and quickly became concerned. She tried reaching Seguro on his cell phone because she knew that he was in the neighborhood and got a feeling that something bad had happened.

Roselia Torres,
“I heard the shots and when I heard the shots I felt something inside. I just felt something and he went straight to my mind because in this area it is very dangerous at night with shootings. I am worried when he is out. I called

his cell phone and it just rang and rang and then I called again and when I called again a man answered and I didn’t know that it was his father and then my credit was finished so I sent to buy another card and when I called again, I asked who was it and then he said this was Mr. Leopold and so I asked where was Ed and he told me they shot him, they rushed him to the theatre, and that is how I knew.”

Seguro who received multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and genital area died five hours later at the KHMH.

Roselia Torres,
“He was buying bread. The lady said that she went to get the bread for him and he was at the gate standing, leaning on his bike, and they said two guys passed on bike and that is when the shots went off.”

At the scene police recovered fourteen nine millimeter expended shells. Police believe that the bullets may have been meant for someone else who lives in the area.

Jacqueline Godwin,
We know that last night’s shooting occurred in front of a residence that’s well known to you guys. Do you believe that residence had anything to do with last night’s shooting?

ASP Bart Jones, Acting Police Press Officer
“At this time that investigation as well is ongoing and we have not determined whether the prison officer was the target or whether he was caught in a cross fire or an incident because he was in front of the residence and shots were fired at that residence. The investigation will either lead to confirm or deny that.”

Roselia Torres,
“The person who shot him doesn’t know that they took away a father with three kids and I am not working at this present moment because he wanted me to stay home and take care of the baby and he said he will work. That is the kind of person he was.”

Edgar Seguro who had only started working at the Belize Central Prison four months ago is described as dedicated husband and father to two young daughters and one son.

Roselia Torres,
“I said if he only had come straight home instead of going into that direction. Its hard because even me, I am scared to live behind Lake I because every time you hear shots and you are always preparing yourself to hit the floor or so. It is so hard, I am scared where I am here behind Lake I. You are afraid to go to the shop at night.”

Police have no suspect and no murder weapon. Jacqueline Godwin for 7NEWS.
