We are not sure just how much more it will benefit those of us who do work in the media but the information a new police website promises to provide should be of some interest to Belizeans and visitors both at home and abroad. The project has been ongoing since late last year and was designed and created by the Police Information Technology Unit. According to the police IT Unit Manager Mario Alcoser those who access the website will be able to get information on a wide range of topics related to most police matters.

Jacqueline Godwin,
We know this is not the first time that the police is trying something like this. I mean in its first attempt it launched a web page primarily for the Police Press Office what happened to that initiative and what will make this more complete, comprehensive and sustainable?

Mario Alcoser, Manager – PITU
“First of all on the police webpage that was made for the press office it was not handled by us. It was not managed nor administered by us so we had nothing to do with it. So it was an initiative done by a think it was a private entity but this is ours and as long as PITU exists this will be there.

This police site is interactive. People can send email to us and it will be acted upon so it will have everything that you can think about in a professional website. We will have about the history of the Police Department, we will have about complaints, downloadables. For example, if you are applying for a form it will be there. So it is varied, it is big.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
The police press release will be made available to everybody. It is on the police website and everybody can download it. It is there?

Mario Alcoser, Manager – PITU
“This website is just a step in the direction that we would like to take but we are working on several projects and we have the crime information system that we plan to roll into Belize City in the following weeks or months probably which is more than this. This is only a website but the crime information system opens an avenue where we will be connecting the dots, connecting the police countrywide towards solving crime.”

You can visit the police website at http://www.belizepolice.bz. The police will also be hiring a content manager to ensure that the website is kept up to date.
