He has been robbed more times than he can count and last night Ladyville businessman Charlie McIntosh had enough. He shot and killed an intruder who waylaid him inside his home. Darrel Hyde – a resident of Burrell Boom – had broken into McIntosh’s home and attacked him with a hammer. But McIntosh fought back with his licensed.38 revolver and it had deadly consequences for Hyde who was a father to be. His twins will be born tomorrow but he is dead tonight because he took a hammer to a gunfight. Here’s the full story.
Keith Swift Reporting,
25 year old Darrel Hyde was shot last night inside this house on Marage Road in Ladyville. The home’s owner Charles McIntosh says that when he arrived home around 11 last night, Hyde was hiding behind the door and attacked him with a hammer.
Charles McIntosh, Killed Intruder
“I was on my way home and my wife called me and told me that someone was trying to break into the house. So I rushed home and searched around the outside of the house and couldn’t find anybody and I went up and knocked on the door expecting Kim to open the door. The door was open but it wasn’t Kim that opened it. It was dark in the house and when I stepped through somebody hit me in the head with a hammer and I had my 38…and what can I say.”
McIntosh says Darrel Hyde struggled with him for the gun. Both men were injured

and the blood stains on the verandah as well as the bruise on McIntosh’s forehead are proof of that.
Charles McIntosh,
“There were four shots but I don’t know, it was in the dark but I usually hit what I aim at so I probably got him about three times. After I shot him, he was a very strong boy and he picked me up and threw me outside holding on to my gun and he was fighting for my gun and my girl came out with the little knife. I yelled to her for help and she came out and stabbed him a couple times in the shoulder and then he jumped up and left.”
And jump is what he did. McIntosh shared with us this surveillance video – in which you can clearly see a seemingly fit and able-bodied Darrel Hyde almost energetically running out of McIntosh’s yard. This again was after Hyde had been shot at least twice and then stabbed.
Darrel Hyde ran but he didn’t get far. He collapsed on this road, about 100 yards from McIntosh’s house. Police picked him up and took him to the hospital where he later died. Darrel’s family says he didn’t have to die.
Patricia Segura, Mother of Deceased
“A dead man carries no tales. They could say all they want to say. They could have at least shot him, break his foot, make him come to the hospital and police can guard him and then they take him to jail. They didn’t have to shoot him so many times and stab him. They didn’t have to stab him because if you shoot somebody in your house, somebody knocks you with a hammer in your head – that person won’t make you come back and get up back. That person will knock you again with a hammer. Because if a person is knocking you again with a hammer, they won’t just touch you with it. They will knock you with a hammer. They will knock you with a hammer and they won’t allow you to come back up – they will make you are down. So I don’t know if that man is telling the truth or he is telling lies.
If he has kids and he has brothers and sisters and he has his mom and his father alive, they say today for me and tomorrow for you; every fat fowl have their Sunday. That is all I have to tell him. Nothing more I have to tell him because every fat fowl have their Sunday.”
Hertha Pope, Wife of Deceased
“He is already dead and I have a next son home who he takes as his own son. What can I tell my son that he can’t see anymore Darrel…”
Darrel’s death has left Hertha pope speechless. She is pregnant with twins for Darrel and is scheduled to give birth tomorrow.
Hertha Pope,
“It is really hard for me right now because I am going into labor tomorrow and with all this stress I don’t know if I will even get the chance to come back out and see my son. But like what my mother in law says, every fat fowl has their Sunday.
Darrel have a good and bad side. Nobody really understands the good part of him, nobody understands Darrel on a whole so I don’t know.”
But that is neither here nor there for Charles McIntosh. He says he was protecting his life. That’s something McIntosh, whose right hand is amputated, has had to do numerous times before. He says he has no regret.
Charles McIntosh,
“I shot him and after shooting him, he struggled with me for at least ten minutes and he was shot pretty bad. Obviously he died so he was shot bad and for ten minutes he struggled with me trying to take that gun away to shoot me.
I don’t have a choice and you can’t have regrets if, it’s not something you like to do I can tell you that, it is not something that you like to do everyday or anything like that but I just live with it. I am a businessman here and if it happens it happens; I am ready. I go home ready to shoot somebody every night I go home.”
Keith Swift,
What do you say to his girlfriend who is expecting twins within the next few days?
Charles McIntosh,
“What can I say? I have nothing to say to her. She should have kept him at home, not my home.”
And that’s why Police Press Officer Clemente Palacio says that by all accounts – it was a justifiable homicide.
Clemente Palacio, Police Press Officer
“The investigations are pending and I don’t think at this time we can say that he will be charged. We must note that this man was actually in his premises and of course we are aware that there are certain laws that deal with people who defend their property.”
It’s of note that Darrel Hyde is a cousin to McIntosh’s common-law wife. As we mentioned, between his business and his home, McIntosh has been robbed numerous times. In August of 2005 he had a shootout with two armed men who similarly lay-waited him at his Marage Road residence. One of the shooters ended up in the hospital, was convicted and went to jail.
