As Governor General, Sir Colville Young represents Belize’s head of state, but did you know that he also has a razor sharp wit and a snappy sense of humour? Or that he’s written poems, plays and musical pieces? Well all that is revealed in the first biography of Sir Colville. It is written by U.S. university professor, Dr. Betty Flinchum. It’s named: “A Cultural Legacy, Sir Colville Young, Governor General of Belize” and Dr. Flinchum

told us why the man behind the office made for a fascinating study.

Dr. Betty Flinchum, Author
“It has been such a pleasure to write this book about Sir Colville because he led such an extraordinarily interesting and worthy life and I think he is a teacher, he is an author, he is musician, is a poet, and he is Belize’s premier linguist. So I am an educator too, I’ve known him for many many years and I thought and felt his life needed to be recorded for Belizeans and for his family. And also I am a great believer in recognizing one’s leaders. I think a nation comes of age when it begins to recognize its leaders and to have its leaders recognized throughout the world. So I hope this little modest effort at beginning a book about Sir Colville will encourage my students, his students, and Belizeans writers to write more about Sir Colville and other great Belizeans.

He’s got four honorary degrees, I don’t have an honorary degree and I have been a full professor for forty years almost. It is not easy to achieve what Sir Colville has achieved and I think that we need to recognize him for it and be grateful that we have a leader of his stature as a Governor General of Belize.”

The book is being launched this evening and will be available widely.
