He could have gotten life behind bars, but 32 year old John Williams will spend 15 years in jail for killing his stepfather. Williams was convicted last Friday of manslaughter for killing his stepfather 49 year old Conuto Velasquez Tillett on April 5th of 2007. Williams along with his stepfather and other friends were socializing at his Tibruce Street home when Tillett allegedly began accusing Williams of stealing money. One thing led to another and Williams picked up a stick and Tillett a hammer. It ended when Williams hit Tillett in the head with the stick. Tillett fell and died.
Williams claimed it was self—defence and that his stepfather was drunk. Today Williams’ Attorney Simeon Sampson asked Judge Adolph Lucas to be lenient because his client had no previous conviction. Justice Lucas sentenced him to 15 years in jail, noting that the deceased was drunk.
