Today Fridays ago 45 year old Hubert “Yankee” Bennett was convicted of manslaughter for killing 18 year old Tiquon Emmanuel. Today Justice Adolph Lucas sentenced “Yankee” Bennett to 17 years in jail but he will only spend 14. Yankee Bennett and Tiquon were arguing over a bike outside the International Player’s Pub on Electric Avenue on August 23rd of 2005. Witnesses testified they saw Bennett pull out a knife and stab Tiquon who died at the hospital.

While he protested his innocent during the trial – today he was remorseful – telling Justice Adolph Lucas that he regrets the loss of Emmanuel’s life. He asked for mercy – saying he has been a good prison inmate and has a clean police record. Tiquon’s mother Curlene Emmanuel also spoke telling the court that quote “he was a child that will never be able to give me grand children. All I have is a picture of him and memories.”

Strong testimony and after taking all that consideration, Justice Lucas sentenced Yankee Bennett to 17 years in prison. He will only spend 14 years because his sentence is retroactive to his arrest in November of 2005.
