Tonight two sisters from Belize City are recovering from gunshot wounds after they were shot while socializing at their home in Rowland Alley which is in the Mesopotamia area. The siblings identified as Sherlett and Clevelee Arnold were reportedly playing a card game with one Dennis Belgrave whom police believe was the intended target. But instead it was the sisters who got hit; Sherlett to the buttocks, Clevelee grazed on the leg. The injuries were not serious, and both were treated and released. Today we spoke with the Officer in charge of Crimes Investigation Branch in Belize City Assistant Superintendent of Police Julio Valdez about the shooting incident. According to Valdez the shooter fired his weapon once but missed but the second time he pulled the trigger that is when both sisters were hit.

ASP Julio Valdez,
“The two sisters where somewhere on Rowland’s Alley, they were along with another male person when somebody just approached into the alley and fired shots at them where one of the sisters got a shot on her left buttocks and the sister got shot on her right foot. They were taken to the hospital and treated.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
We understand that they were not target.

ASP Julio Valdez,
“I believe they were not the intended target, yes, they missed the male person and he was the intended target.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
The shooter has been described to us only as a fisherman. Do you guys have the

suspect?

ASP Julio Valdez,
“Well not as a fisherman, he was wearing a fisherman hat or cap as we call it but we have a suspect we are looking for already. So as soon as we have that suspect we will bring him in.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
What would be the motive for this shooting?

ASP Julio Valdez,
“Well I am not sure at this point yet also Jackie.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
So all the sisters are saying is that they were playing?

ASP Julio Valdez,
“They were playing yes and the person approached them and fired shots at them and missed the person who was the intended target and caught the two sisters.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
But you know who you’re looking for?

ASP Julio Valdez,
“Yes we know who we’re looking for.”

And while Belize City Police believe that Dennis Belgrave was the intended target reports to 7News are that Sherlett Arnold was one of two main witnesses in a murder trial that started yesterday in the Supreme Court. Information is that Sherlett Arnold was scheduled to appear in court this morning where she was expected to testify in the shooting death of Kevin Parks in November of 2006. In that incident area resident Charlie Moss was also shot and left paralyzed. Because of the shooting, she could not appear, and the case proceeded without her.
