For four days eighteen year old Belize City resident Stephen Palacio has been on the run after allegedly knocking down and killing six year old Jose Garcia Jr. But today in the company of his attorney he finally handed himself in to the police. 7News understands that as the investigation continues into the tragic accident the police have been preparing a number of charges against the accused including manslaughter by negligence.
On Friday eighteen year old Stephen Palacio is expected to be arraigned in Belize City Magistrate’s Court. According to police they are still tying to determine if the Toyota Highlander Palacio was driving had been stolen.
Around six on Saturday evening Garcia Jr. was hit as he crossed the intersection between Amara Avenue and King Street. Eyewitnesses say the Highlander was doing in excess of 60 miles an hour. The impact was so great it threw Jose Garcia Jr. into the air and he landed fifty feet away in the drain. The boy died on the spot due to head and neck injuries.
