And as you saw at the airport, there was a massive show of love for the Taiwanese President from the Belize Chinese community. The men leading that charge were City Councillor Eric Chang and President of the Belize Chinese Association Lee Mark Chang. Before his arrival, Lee Mark and Eric spoke to us about the significance of the presidential visit.
Eric Chang, City Councillor
“We’re pretty excited. This year is the 20th year that Taiwan and Belize has foreign ties and I am originally from Taiwan so I am very very excited to meet the Taiwan President.”
Lee Mark Chang, President- Belize Chinese Association
“We have the President of another country coming to Belize and I think as Belizeans we have to show our best face.”
Keith Swift,
When did you find out about the visit?
Lee Mark Chang,
“We found out about two weeks ago and we have been preparing with the Chinese Association and also with the Taiwanese Embassy to make sure that this welcome committee is the best. It is a great pleasure for Belize to be hosting the President of another country to Belize and it shows the importance of Belize and that Belize has potential for the future.”
Keith Swift,
What will you tell the President when you meet him?
Eric Chang,
“Well I guess it is a honour I guess.”
And tune in tomorrow morning at 10:00 when we’ll have live coverage of President Ma’s visit to the National Assembly.
