A hit and run driver has been charged with manslaughter by negligence and failure to stop and render aid after he left his accident victim on the roadside to die. Around 7 pm on Saturday, Manuel Duban and his common-law wife Eva Gomez were on their bicycles on the Bermudian Landing Road riding from Buttercup to Burrell Boom to attend church when they were rear ended by a green 1995 Nissan Sentra.
32 year old taxi driver Juan Rodriguez was behind the wheels of the Nissan Sentra but instead of stopping, police say he sped off. Duban and Gomez sustained serious injuries and Duban died on the scene. Gomez was taken to the KHMH and is still hospitalized with a broken arm.
Rodriquez was additionally charged with causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, and negligent grievous harm. No plea was taken and he was offered and met bail of $5,000. His next court date is January 28th, 2010.
