10 days after he was shot in a ride by shooting on Supal Street, 27 year old Dewayne Lopez became the year’s 90th murder victim. He passed this morning at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he had been since he was shot on Monday evening December 7th. As we reported, at about 5 that evening Lopez was standing at the corner of Supal Street and Kut Avenue when a man on a bike rode passed and opened fire. Dewayne was shot once in the lower back. The bullet penetrated his body and destroyed his internal organs. He never regained consciousness. His mother Bernadette White says that her son underwent two surgeries but none of them could have saved him.
Bernadette White, Mother of Murder Victim
“My daughter called and said he got shot in his back. He went through two surgeries.”
Keith Swift,
“Did you expect him to die?”
Bernadette White,
“He never would have made it….I never really expected he would have died. It was just a shot. My son was a loving child, the only problem he had was his girlfriends because he had too many girls, that was all the problem with my son. My son wasn’t into gang.”
Keith Swift,
“He was shot a week ago and nobody has been arrested, the person who shot him is now his killer. Does that bother you?”
Bernadette White,
“Yes really.”
A sad note is that today, Dewayne Lopez’s son turned two months old. His family believes he was a random crime victim and that any in the area at that time would have been shot.
