On Friday Dangriga Police charged a second suspect for last Wednesday’s robbery and assault on 76 year old businessman Martin Holness. As we reported, Holness was attacked at around 10:30 pm just as he was entering his home by two armed men who opened fire on him. He was pistol whipped and the gunmen escaped with $600. Shortly after the incident- police detained John Elijio who was charged and remanded to prison. The second suspect, 28 year old Thomas Ramos was arrested on Thursday night and charged with robbery on Friday morning. But Ramos’ sister Sharilee Makin says he’s innocent. She told us why.

Sharilee Makin, Sister of Accused
“I know my brother because he was not even at the scene and moreover, John Eligio, who is the other assailant that was caught, did not mention my brother’s name. He mentioned somebody else’s name and the police even detained the other assailant for an hour or so and just had him give a statement and he released and freed of any charges. And then they imposed the charge which would have been on the other assailant on my brother and that is not fair.”

Keith Swift,
“But why would they out of all the other people in Dangriga choose your brother?”

Sharilee Makin,
“Because he is an ex-con. He has spent time in prison already and February of this year would have made it three years since my brother has been out of prison. He is trying very hard not get involved in this kind of crime and I don’t know why the police don’t give him a chance. Why is it that as something happens, it has to be Thomas Ramos they come after. It just hurts me that every time it is he.”

Thomas Ramos has been remanded to prison until April 24th. Sharilee Makin has written the Commissioner of Police, the Ombudsman, the Police Internal Affairs, and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
