Be on the lookout for bogus checks. That’s the word coming from the Police Department this evening as they put out the alert that there are three types of bad checks in circulation. Inspector Sinquest Martinez told us what to look out for.
Insp. Sinquest Martinez, Police Department
“We have some local and international checks being cashed at banks and at some business places. We are warning the public if any checks come in they need to verify these checks. They look very legitimate but they have to be careful of cashing the government checks, private checks and the traveller’s checks. So we are having problems with that at this moment as we speak.”
Jules Vasquez,
“So there are three types of checks, is there any trend we should look out for or just those three types, government checks, private checks, and traveller’s checks – I mean I issue private checks?”
Insp. Sinquest Martinez,
“Well we are dealing with a case right now with Radisson Fort George checks that are out there, that are being cashed. So I am just warning the public to be careful.”
Jules Vasquez,
“So if I see those they may be fraudulent and I should call the Radisson?”
Insp. Sinquest Martinez,
“They need to call the police and likewise they need to go to the bank and cash the check likewise.”
Jules Vasquez,
“You have any idea of the sums these are made out in?”
Insp. Sinquest Martinez,
“They are made out in $2,000, $1,900 – so there are several checks out there that we have in our possession which we are investigating.”
Jules Vasquez,
“How many of them have surfaced thus far that you are aware of?”
Insp. Sinquest Martinez,
“Right now we have eight Radisson checks, we have two government checks, and we have ten traveller’s checks.”
Jules Vasquez,
“Do you believe they are all emanating from the same people?”
Insp. Sinquest Martinez,
“Well the Radisson checks it is one person. The Traveller’s check is a pretty young investigation and I won’t divulge much information about that but I am just warning the public to be careful about cashing the checks, especially the business people.”
