Twenty six year old Jemaine Belgrave, one of two persons who allegedly fired shots at Police Constable Harold Grinage was charged with attempted murder when he appeared today in the number one Magistrate’s Court. Chief Magistrate Margaret McKenzie explained to Belgrave that she could not take a plea because the offences are indictable. She also explained to Belgrave that the court cannot offer him bail because of the nature of the offence. She remanded Belgrave into custody until May 19th. The second suspect, Jeffrey Flowers, is still at large.
The shooting took place around 9:30 on the night of Friday, March 26th. Grinage reported that he was on mobile patrol on Baghdad Street when he saw Belgrave and Flowers walking at the corner of Baghdad and Alexandria Streets. He said Belgrave and Flowers began to run when they saw him and while they were running, they took out firearms from their waists and fired several shots at him.
Grinage said he threw himself to the ground and returned fire, and both men ran in the direction of West Street and disappeared. The police reported that they recovered 15 expended 9 milimeter shells from the scene. Belgrave handed himself into police on Monday, March 29th.
