Just yesterday we saw two men get off on attempted murder – when the victim himself retracted his statement about who stabbed him. And while convictions in those major crimes are disturbingly few and far between, there have been conviction in lesser crimes as was the case today when a purse thief was sentenced to 7 years in prison. 21 year old Carlton Lord was found guilty of four counts of robbery.
Magistrate Aretha Ford sentenced him to 7 years for each count with the stipulation that three of the sentences run concurrently to a 5 year term he is presently serving for robbery. The other 7 year sentence will start after the concurrent terms are finished. So in total he will serve 10 years.
The incident dates back to June of 2009 when Lord armed with a firearm held up and robbed four women who were in the Endless Creations Salon on King Street. He stole various pieces of jewellery and a cell phone. But he ran out of the establishment with such speed that he dropped most of the jewellery. Police caught him later that night with one of the women’s cell phones.
In his defence Lord claimed that he was sleeping at his mother’s house at the time of the robbery.
