The world cup comes along every four years and in Belize a large section of the population is avidly following it - spending dozens of hours watching games.
And all of that, when, strictly speaking - we don't even have a horse in the race! So imagine in the very nationalistic Mexico where the passion for football is unmatched!
And so you can imagine their despair this weekend when they fell badly to the Argentineans, three to one.
And according to reports 1 Mexican fan took the loss too seriously when he took his own life, jumping off the Belize - Mexico Bridge into the Rio Hondo after the game. Berne Velasquez who sells his CD's at the border every weekend, told us what he saw.
Berne Velasquez

"All I saw was when the dude, the other young guys that were swimming on the other side of the bridge ran across the bridge, and a big old commotion was there, a big old crowd. And they jumped in the water, to go pull out the guy, who jumped in because Mexico lost. It's ridiculous, it's crazy."
"Other guys jumped in, tried to get him out, they did get him out, started pumping him, and he started vomiting. I think the guy could've been saved if the authorities on the other side had reacted quickly to try to administer CPR."
According to Mexican authorities, it was not a suicide; he was most likely drunk and drowned. They say the body of a Mexican national was taken first to Corozal police because it came out on the Belize side of the river. After that, Corozal police transferred it to the office of the Attorney General of Quintana Roo.
Their investigations show that he had jumped into the river once and on the second time, he was likely carried away on the currents.
