Forty year old Lancelot Arana who was caught with a crowbar trying to pry open the Indeco Building at Belize Port, was sentenced to 3 years today in the Magistrate Court after he was found guilty of attempted burglary. Magistrate Kathleen Lewis, who imposed the sentence, said she gave Arana 3 years because he had no previous conviction.

The incident occurred around 6:50 in the morning on January 27, 2010. Arana, a labourer of Jane Usher Boulevard was caught by two security guards attempting to pry open the building. He was subdued and the police were called. When the police arrived they saw Arana lying on the ground with the crowbar beside him.

Arana testified and denied he committed the offence. He claimed that he was just passing through the area and he was subdued by a security guard because he refused to give the security guard a cigarette. The court visited the scene of the crime.

His attempt is one of at least three reported on the port so far this year.
