A jury has found a woman guilty of killing her common law husband.
It happened in Burrell Boom near the racetrack at 2:30 on the morning of December 13, 2008. According to her confession, the then 38 year old Kim Brannon, chopped up 38 year old Anthony "Antics" Herrera while he slept.
She did it with a short machete which she used to slight the ride side of his neck. While he lay dead, she waited five hours before going to a relative with a story saying that two men had come into the house to chop him up.
But under interrogation, she gave up on that story and admitted to police that she did it. She also led them to the blood stained murder weapon which she had hidden in the bathroom. She told police she did it because she was the victim of sustained physical abuse at his hands.
The trial started a week ago and in her testimony before the court, Brannon - who is now 41 - contradicted her confession statement and reverted to her original story saying that Herrera was killed by two men who came to her house. She said she heard a knock on the back door and when she opened it she was pushed in her chest and two men entered. She said they chopped Herrera and left with a bag of cannabis.
But the jury of 6 women and 6 men didn't buy it and after about four and a half hours of deliberation, they arrived at a verdict of guilty of murder.
She will be sentenced on December second. As we noted, this is not the first time Brannon has killed a boyfriend. According to our records, in 2006 she went to Catt's Pool Room in an area known as Lover's Lane in Orange Walk, broke down a room door and attacked a couple stabbing them both, killing Paul Gonzalez, her boyfriend at the time. She was charged but never convicted in that case.
