Tonight, 18-year-old Cayo resident George Velasquez is hospitalized after being involved in a high impact motorcycle collision.

Last night, the motorcycle he was driving collided head-on into a turning car, and both he and his passenger, 18 year old Jason Linarez were flung off the bike.

Tonight, they are alive by the grace of God, and their helmets.

Here's the enormous impact - and what police had to say about it:

ACP Joseph Myvette - Head, NCIB
"Last night, sometime shortly after 8:30 p.m., San Ignacio Police were called to the scene of a road traffic accident in Santa Elena Town. And later, they visited the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where they saw George Velasquez, 18 years [old] and Jason Linarez, also 18 years [old], who was reported to police were on a motorcycle being driven by Velasquez. They were heading from a north-to-south direction, when a car coming from the opposite direction crossed into their lane in an effort to turn off into another street, causing the collision. The driver then fled the scene, leaving both persons on the scene. Velasquez is in a stable condition, based on the injuries he received, while Linarez was treated and released."

Myevett added that the driver was in the wrong because he was making a left turn into a lane of oncoming traffic and did not yield.

Police haven't located the driver of the taxi so far.
