Yesterday you may have seen or heard about our Facebook blast that our News's director Jules Vasquez's WHATSAPP number had been hijacked. And it all happened without him ever leaving his desk.
It's a Whatsapp phishing scam that's targeting Belizean phone numbers and taking in quite a few unsuspecting users. But you can go from unsuspecting to out of your mind in a few minutes after you see someone hijack your WhatsApp account right before your very eyes. I found out more today:
Jules did follow Lance Howard's advice and has recovered his account which is now protected by two-factor authentication.
But if you'd like to avoid this ordeal there are two other simple steps to escape it. The first: never share a 6-digit WhatsApp SMS code with others - regardless of who asks, and the second is to make sure to set a phone passcode.
And in that Digicell post today the company warned its customers against the scam advising them to be wary saying quote: "Digi urges all mobile customers to remain vigilant and disregard any request to share your WhatsApp 6-digit verification code." end quote.
