And while that family continues to mourn, another is grateful that their loved one is still alive. Shots rang out on New Road just after 7 last night, at a yard frequently visited by gunmen. This time the target was 19 year old Kareem Barona.
But Barona survived and is currently admitted to the KHMH. His girlfriend spoke about the moment she learned he had been hit. Courtney Menzies has this story.
This cell phone video captures the desperate moments as police lugged 19 year old Kareem Barona into a police mobile - minutes after he was shot.
His girlfriend was with him moments before the shooting, and she recalls the moments she heard the gunshots.
Voice of: Deidra Avila, Girlfriend of Victim
"Before the shooting happen, me and my friend gone to shop to buy so I told her, I want a chicken. Then I look and I said, ey isn't that KJ? So she said, yes it's him, so I yelled, you KJ come here, and he came and so he said, what you want? And I said, I want a chicken, so he said, right now he would get it for me. So we were there a little while talking and then his friend was waiting for him at the lane and he went. When I went upstairs, I heard gunshots and I said, ey Tanya isn't that gunshots? So I run downstairs and I run out of the alley and someone said, ey Deidra, KJ got shot, so I ran on New Road and when I reach they were putting him in the truck and I just jump in and I get this buss on my foot and they took him to hospital."
The area has seen multiple shootings over the years - even the owner of the yard that Barona was standing in has been victim to a shooting.
This victim survived shots to the leg and midsection, and was to be discharged today, but according to Avila, he began bleeding again. Still, she says he is recovering well.
Deidra Avila, Girlfriend of Victim
"Right now he in good condition but a bullet is still in him and he feel kind of weak so they put him on drips. But he's good though."
Courtney Menzies:
"And you said he was shot twice, once to the stomach and once to the foot."
Deidra Avila, Girlfriend of Victim
"Right here, and in his foot and his hand buss."
The victim Kareem Barona Jr is not to be confused with the other Kareem Barona, presumably his father who is very familiar to police, and has also been shot.
