Last week, we told you about a chopping incident on Marine Parade in Belize City in which a homeless man allegedly injured a 22-year-old in a reportedly unprovoked attack. A police officer had to shoot the assailant in the leg to stop him from hurting any of the responding lawmen. Yesterday, he was seen hobbling into court with the leg injury.
Tonight, the alleged attacker, 47-year-old Francis Ramos, is at the Belize Central Prison. He was arraigned yesterday before Senior Magistrate Stephanie Gillett on the offense of aggravated assault against Police Officer Harold Garbutt. He pled not guilty to the charge, and he was granted bail in the sum of $2,000. But, because he was unable to meet bail at the close of the business day, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison. He will remain there until he meets bail, or until his next court date, which is scheduled for April 22nd, 2021. Of note is that Ramos will still have to answer to a charge in connection with the chopping of 22-year-old Akeem Patterson.
