And while we wait to see what the courts will say, we posed another issue to Minister Musa that is also a long time practice within the department – everyday citizens are victims to the harsh justice system while their wealthier or more powerful counterparts get away without charges - as recently happened with the Port of Big Creek when they got off all curfew violation charges.
Well, the minister was quick to say that things do even out, and the example he gave was with the proprietors of Old Belize.
Last week, we showed you a video where a large crowd of people were seen on Old Belize's Kukumba Beach. That supposed beach party certainly went against COVID violations and landed the owner of the establishment in court.
Hon. Kareem Musa - Minister of Home Affairs
"Are you aware that the proprietors of Old Belize were taken before the court yesterday. Because they had a beach activity. And you're talking about big people, you can't get bigger than that. They were taken yesterday, and they were charged for hosting a social gathering."
Jules Vasquez
"On Valentine's Day."
Hon. Kareem Musa
"I don't recall the exact day but yes so they were charged and even though that was after the fact we have to take action in these instances regardless of big companies or small people because we are in a pandemic and we have to ensure that the laws are being complied with."
