Last night we told you about the horrifying murder by fire of 36-year-old Kendra Middleton and her 3-year-old son Aiden Perez. Middleton and her son were at home on Friday night when their home was set on fire. The alleged perpetrator is Middleton's ex-boyfriend Demas Mendez.

And tonight the Office of the Special Envoy is speaking out to condemn this gruesome killing. They point to recent data which shows that violence against women and children is pervasive and in fact increasing particularly with the onset of the pandemic.

And in this latest release Special Envoy Rosanna Briceno vowed to use the power of her office to quote: "strengthen our legal frameworks and institutions for the effective persecution and punishment, and where possible the rehabilitation, of the perpetrators…" End quote.

Briceno also called on every Belizean, but especially on Belizean men to help prevent, openly reject and condemn all acts of violence against our women and children.

The release ends by saying that Belizeans must all play their particular roles in helping to challenge gender stereotypes, harmful traditional and cultural practices, and discrimination.
