And while that crime can be chalked up to very crossed signals, last night's shooting of a 14-year-old girl from Hattieville village was all too real and absolutely terrifying for both the teenager and her mother.
It happened at 10:15 in the farmers site area of Hattieville.
And this evening that mother spoke off-camera to our news team about the night she never thought she'd see, a hail of gunfire falling on her very own home:
Voice of Marcia Martin - Parent of Shooting Victim "I just went into a doze when the first gun shot rang out, bang, that shook me and I could not believe it was right here in my own yard. When the second one shot, my husband got up and said babe that is gunshot, we jump up and I try grab my phone because I told him that sounds like outside and after that it was a riddle of bullets, we count up to 7. When all the chaos was over, I was screaming for the kids asking if they were alright, they respond mom we are here. After everything calm down my oldest daughter said mommy, baby get shot because that's what she call her little sister, I said what and when we ran in the room, we noticed and all we could do is tell her hold it and put something on it, bring her out in the chair and me and her father got dressed quickly. My oldest son was with us and he said mommy I'm going for help, but I told him I already called 911 but he said I'm still going for help because I don't know if the police will reach in time. He ran to one of his friends and he got the help and by the time the vehicle came, I told my baby come let's go, she said mommy I can't move my leg, I can't move it, it hurt. We picked her up and ran to the vehicle, we got in and I was holding on the wound and the young man took us to Belize City. We got there, the doctors were amazing I must say because they responded without a glitch. You always see these things happening but when it knocks at your door, you never in a million years think it would happen and for those people who did this, they know who they are, god knows who they are, he doesn't sleep, he will have justice. Maybe man won't have justice but he will have justice for me."
Doctors were able to remove the bullet. This afternoon they discharged the teenager.
Police believe that while she was hit, it was her older brother who was the intended target.
