But while the unions were taken by surprise, the Cabinet Members were well informed during Tuesday's meeting. They decided that the Prime Minister would inform the unions of the government's firm position, and that he would also address the nation.
Government put that position formally to the joint unions in a 7-page letter sent to them and dated yesterday. The document is signed by the Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary and is labelled "Letter of Government's Undertakings." It outlines all the good governance measures already underway and then lists all the compensatory allowances to the union's memberships in consideration of the fact that their pay is getting cut.
