And from a ruckus at the border to a war in the city… a State of Emergency has become a common way of dealing with an increase in crime. In the past, gang members would be rounded up by the dozens and sent to prison for a month or three just to be released back onto the streets and rounded up again when murders start going up.

But the Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, is taking the road less travelled by incorporating a mediation session in the month that this latest set of young men will be behind bars.

For two weeks, these men will be engaged in activities to help them vent their frustrations and air their differences with the rival gangs. And while today saw riled up inmates who had a lot to say, it is a necessary start to a long and grueling process that will hopefully end with these men getting jobs rather than getting shot.

Courtney Menzies was at the prison this morning and has this story.
