For two days now - Guatemalan truckers who are coming over to Belize to pick up corn - have been blocking the Belize Guatemala crossing on their side of the border.
They are protesting regulations on this side of the border, saying there's been a significant increase in fees. That issue is that each time they cross - which may be more than once a week - they have to pay for a new COVID test - which must be done by the private contractor n the Belize side of the border.
But government isn't budging - a release this evening from the Ministry of Health & Wellness says that the Cabinet of Belize has made a decision that ALL travellers entering Belize through the northern and western borders will be administered a COVID-19 test by the Ministry of Health & Wellness, at their own expense. NO external COVID-19 PCR or rapid tests will be accepted at these points of entry.
Again, these tests are not administered by the Ministry but by a private contractor. We note that those entering the country through the airport can bring their own tests from abroad.
