The Belize Coast Guard made a drug bust at sea today near Half Moon Caye. But while you may be thinking of kilos of cocaine afloat near some faraway Caye, this time it was about 70 pounds of weed - and the Coast Guard believes it was headed from Jamaica to Honduras.

The Coast Guard's Fleet Commander Alma Pinelo told KREM News more:

Lt. Col. Alma Pinelo - Fleet Commander, BCG
"This morning at about 8:30 the coast guard patrol at light house reef at half moon caye found a suspect package in the water about 100 feet from the dock at half moon and upon inspection, they realize it was packs of suspected drugs in their. There was no one around, so it was just in the water, it was found property. From inspection there from the crew, we knew upon reaching it was marijuana and we weight it upon reaching here at base in the presence of police and it ended up being about 30.95 kilograms of suspected marijuana. We suspect that it was in trans shipment from Jamaica or somewhere in the Caribbean going to Honduras and ended up in Belize waters, it's fairly new, some of it was wet, not all of it was fully wet, it was 36 packs and only 3 of them were wet. You could tell significantly from just feeling that it had gotten significant amount of water in it."

The drugs were handed over to the Anti Narcotics Unit.
