Tonight, Hubert Baptist is back behind bars after having his bail revoked at the Supreme Court. The crown counsel, Glenford Dennison, submitted that Baptist had violated two of his Supreme Court bail; the first being that he was arrested and charged for assaulting a police officer on March 10th, and two that he was in breach of his 8pm curfew since, on March 30th, he was caught on Central American Boulevard at 9:30pm.
Baptist's attorney, Lisa Barrow, submitted to the court that, in the first instance, her client was shot by police inside his yard. She added that he was found on the street after his curfew because he had been experiencing vehicle problems while returning from Corozal. Barrow also told the court that the police were targeting her client and that the Baptist brothers were both shot by rubber bullets and will be filing a civil suit against the police department.
But Madam Justice Lamb ruled that Baptist was in violation of the conditions of his bail. Baptist was remanded to the Belize Central Prison. This morning, Baptist and his older brother, Brandon Baptist, along with the Grinage brothers, Sheldon and John, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser to answer to charges of being a member of a gang and for the offense of using a video to promote gang activities. Baptist pleaded not guilty and their case was adjourned for May 10th.
