A woman was in court today for allegedly threatening her stepfather with a knife. 24-year-old Kayjah Burgess was arraigned on two offences, aggravated assault and using insulting words against her stepfather, Keith Yearwood. Burgess appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Baja Shoman and pleaded not guilty to both charges.

According to Yearwood, on May 2nd, Burgess threatened him with a knife in their family home - and in front of his wife, who is Kayjah's mother. Yearwood allegedly pulled a machete to defend himself and when his wife got between them, Burgess went outside. Yearwood followed her and that's when she allegedly insulted him.

At the arraignment today, Magistrate Shoman offered her bail in the sum of $1,300 plus one surety of the same amount, with stringent conditions that she must not get into any physical or verbal conflict with Yearwood - with home she shares an address.

Burgess was able to post bail by 4:00 this evening and she is due back in court on July 5th.

Notably, these charges come right after Burgess publicly made an allegation of a very serious nature against Yearwood on Facebook.
