He was accused of the murder of his common-law wife, but Andrew Caliz pleaded down to manslaughter - and will only serve three years in jail for it. This was the decision of justice Antonette Moore on Tuesday in the Punta Grade Supreme Court.
She sentenced him to three years and he had already spent 1 year and 6 months. He will now spend the 1 year and 6 months remaining on probation.
It's the resolution of a matter that began two years ago when Caliz claimed to have accidentally shot and killed his common-law wife Nohemy Caceres.
He rushed her to the hospital, but she had bled out and was pronounced dead on arrival.
And while this case has languished in the courts for the better part of 3 years, in April Caliz chose to enter a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter by negligence.
The amended indictment was read to Caliz and he has pleaded not guilty to Murder and guilty to Manslaughter by Negligence.
No compensation was ordered since she has no relatives in Belize.
Notable is that this case could set precedent in the manslaughter by negligence case against Jasmine Hartin.
