Another matter related to the Coast Guard is the criminal investigation into whether there was an abuse of assets when John Saldivar took Lev German cruising on a coast guard vessel. The US State Department mentioned it in their own reporting of the matter and Compol Chester says he is investigating. Bennett told us that they've been collaborating fully with the investigators.
Elton Bennett, Commandant, Belize Coast Guard
"Belize Police Department have been taken the lead in that investigation. We've been made ourselves available. I have been interviewed by the police and other members of the coast guard to find out exactly how that works in the Belize coast guard - how do you gain access to a coast guard vessel and how it is use and so that investigation is fully ongoing and we are in full support of that."
