On January 20th, police constable Arturo Leal was in court answering to traffic related charges after the vehicle he was driving drifted into the opposite lane and collided into another car back in December on the Phillip Goldson Highway. Officers had reported that they could smell alcohol on Leal's breath, and that his speech was slurred.

Well, he was back in court today where he was slapped with another charge: drove motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit. His urine sample revealed that he had indeed been under the influence when he caused the accident.

Leal pleaded not guilty and since his old bail remained, which he had paid, he was free to go until April 20th.

The accident had occurred in Sandhill Village, and resulted in injuries to a Belize Bank employee. Leal had previously been charged with negligent harm, drove motor vehicle without due care and attention, used an unlicensed motor vehicle, and drove motor vehicle while not being covered by third party risk insurance.
