Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams is suing Shyne Barrow, and in the process he's also taking Channel 7 and Channel 5 to court.
That's because Shyne paid for one of his press releases to be posted on Channel 7's Facebook page as an ad. The release was labelled, quote "Belize Under Siege: Citizen Insecurity! 5 shot 3 Dead in 48 hours!"
In that release, Barrow made some claims against Commissioner Williams alleging that he had issued a gun license to Kurtis Usher - who was recently murdered. As the Commissioner has explained, that license was actually issued long before by his predecessor Allen While - not him.
Marshalleck writes, "Such an impression is entirely inaccurate and the words of the press release identified are highly defamatory of our client…our client's reputation has been substantially harmed by the publication of such defamatory allegations, the nature of which are deeply distressing and embarrassing for him."
And, now Compol Williams has retained Senior Counsel Andrew Marshalleck to bring suit against Barrow, along with Tropical Vision Limited and Great Belize Productions.
Marshalleck has demanded that Barrow, quote, "publish another release in like manner as the first with a full and complete retraction and apology in terms to be approved by our client," as well as covering costs and damages.
Not surprisingly, Barrow has told us he will not retract or apologize - and is prepared to fight the matter in court.
On the advice of our attorney Channel 7 will post a full retraction and apology on our Facebook page.
