And in response to spiraling gang warfare in the streets - police are locking up prominent gang figures.

One of them was arrested and charged yesterday - and he is in jail tonight on remand.

31 year old Alex Underwood appeared at the magistrates court today, represented by attorney Richard "Dickie" Bradley, and pleaded not guilty to the charge of being a member of a gang.

Underwood told the court that this is the second time he has been charged with the same offense, only for the charge to be withdrawn later.

Due to the nature of the charge, the senior magistrate told Underwood that bail cannot be granted until after 90 days, but he can still apply for supreme court bail.

Police allege that Underwood is the leader of the South Side Gangsters, on Cesar Ridge Road. They believe that he may have knowledge about the recent spike in gang related city murders.

But Underwood's family is claiming that their relative is being wrongfully accused. They say he's a subcontractor with Cisco Construction and is also the owner of a Football team in the Premier league.

Underwood was remanded to prison until September 16th 2023, the family is in the process of seeking bail at the High Court on Friday.
