She's the Treasury Clerk accused of skimming almost a hundred grand from the public purse, and yesterday June Belisle pleaded guilty of theft from the Government of Belize.
It was $91,639.58 - and here's how the 46 year old did it. Between October 2019 and October 2022, the First Class Clerk contacted several single mothers. She told them that there was a financial assistance program where the monies would be deposited into their bank account at the end of the month. They were to keep a small portion of the funds, then give her the rest, which they did. On her end, she entered their names into the Smart Stream System as if the single parents were Teachers hired by the government - and it slipped right under the radar.
Belisle had confessed to the theft, and in a caution statement she gave police, she attributed her actions to her financial strain she was under at the time.
