A man who was remanded to prison today attempted a daring escape, but was stopped by police before he could get away. 23-year-old Rupert Codd was arraigned on a single charge of sexual assault. A 41-year-old woman reported to police that on Sunday, she was walking on the Phillip Goldson Highway when a man dragged her off the sidewalk and behind a zinc house. He then touched her inappropriately before she managed to escape. Today, Codd was denied bail because he was in debt to the court for over $3,000 and also because he is expected to be slapped with more charges.

After his arraignment, Codd tried to escape from the officer escorting him by dashing through the corridor towards the front entrance. However, officers managed to catch and subdue him. He is now expected to be charged with attempted escape.

Codd has a rape case pending before the court, which he was on bail for since December 2022. He also has a conviction for robbery which carried a $5,000 fine.

He will appear back in court on February 19.
