Police have charged one of the men who they say killed underworld figure Jose Matus in a broad daylight execution. He is 27 year old Jimmy Rojas, a city Maintenance Worker and a resident of Peter Secco Street. Today in court he was read two counts, a common assault upon a woman from an incident back in July 2023, and murder for Matus's killing last week. He pleaded not guilty to the assault but was remanded for the murder and is in jail tonight.
Police believe he was one of the gunmen in a minivan that had been trailing Matus and zoned in on him as he was leaving a home on Jimmy Dyer Street. Two gunmen jumped out of the van and opened fire on the drivers' side of his GMC Envoy at close range - killing him in the driver's seat. One of the weapons was an assault rifle.
Police believe the killing was ordered by one of the Belize City gangs. Matus was a high profile target because he was reported to be a marijuana supplier to various crews.
