A 39-year-old driver from Double Head Cabbage is tonight out on bail after being arraigned for a double fatality that claimed the lives of a father and son on the Philip Goldson Highway.

Melvin Harris was formally charged with two counts of manslaughter by negligence, two counts of causing death by careless conduct, and one count of driving without due care and attention. The charges stem from a July 8th collision between Miles 28 and 29 on the highway in Biscayne Village, which resulted in the deaths of father and son Josue and Felipe Solis.

Harris appeared before Magistrate Ludlow Black this morning in Belize City, represented by attorneys Leeroy Banner and Richard "Dickie" Bradley. No plea was taken due to the indictable nature of the offenses. He was granted bail of $5,000 dollars.

According to police, Harris was driving a white Hino truck when he attempted to avoid potholes by swerving onto the opposite lane. That's when a red motorcycle carrying the Solis father and son approached. Although Harris tried to return to his lane, the motorcycle collided with the right front portion of the truck. Both men were flung from the cycle and suffered fatal head and body injuries.

Harris is due back in court on September 11, 2025.
