They allegedly robbed a police civilian staffer of his cell phone and other items at gunpoint - but the SPU caught a crew of 5 shortly after and recovered the stolen items. Today in court one of them pleaded guilty - but all 5 are on remand tonight.
Four of the accused are very well known to police: 24-year-old Shemaud Nunez; 19-year-old Shemar Zuniga; 26-year-old Edward Saldano, 22-year-old Rudolph Gibson, and 20-year-old Devon Garcia, who live in the same West Street neighborhood.
They appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3 where they were jointly charged with robbery for allegedly stealing a $500 cellphone from 23-year-old Aaron Whyte.
In court, Zuniga pleaded guilty to the charge, while the other four pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor did not withdraw the charge from the remaining accused, arguing that all acted together in the commission of the offense.
Zuniga's sentencing has been deferred until October 17, when the court will hear from his character witnesses before sentencing. Due to the seriousness of the charge, bail was denied for all five men, and they were remanded to Prison.
