He's a Senior Counsel both in age and years of practice, but tonight Hubert Elrington has been suspended.
The General Legal Council has found the 77 year old guilty of "grave professional misconduct".
This arises from a complaint made by a client where Senior Counsel Elrington took $6,000.00 from a client Orpha Martinez to institute a claim for her against Scotia Bank Belize. But, he neglected to institute the claim for many years. And he also failed to keep her updated. "To compound matters, Senior Counsel Elrington gave an undertaking to the Council to repay the money in settlement of the complaint and failed to do so."
As a consequence, the GLC has found him guilty of "grave professional misconduct" and has ordered him to pay back Martinez the total sum of $6,000.00. He will also be suspended from the practice of law for six months and for longer if he doesn't pay back all the money. The notice of his suspension has been sent to all courts.
