Last week we told you about the stabbing that occurred in Dangriga on the 19th. The victim Gavin Armstrong was socializing at an event when it happened, and he was stabbed twice in the neck. Police then detained a 4th form student in connection with the stabbing and he was charged with attempted murder.
Yesterday that high schooler appeared in court with his attorney OJ Elrington who made a bail application for him, after the victim signed an afidavit confirming that the young man was not the person who attacked him. Elrington further explained the case:
Oj Elrington, Attorney
"So subsequent to the victim coming out of the hospital I believe it was on either the 21st which was the Saturday well whenever he came out which would have been on the 21st, a day or 2 after he was shown a photo of the person who had been in custody and charged at that point and time or who they said they were going to charge at that point and time for attempted murder and he indicated that no that is not the person that stabbed me. Thereafter he attempted to go to the police station on Saturday, and on Monday to make a further statement to say categorically that the person who they had in their custody and who they had charged was not the person who inflicted the wounds on him. Regrettably the police refused to take the statement and he was still subjected to being charged with attempted murder and being incarcerated and I believe he was taken up to the Hattieville prison. Thankfully the high court in considering his bail application as though special reasons were made out because to be able to get bail for attempted murder you have to make out special reasons before the high court and the court felt as though special reasons had been made out and in considering the fact that he is a high school student and the fact that he had an unblemished criminal record that they would grant him bail, of course bail being granted on very stringent conditions."
Bail was granted by Justice Candace Nanton in the sum of $6,000 dollars.
