Tonight, the mother of Benigno Loria is battling back against the report that her son was a member of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel, formerly headed by Nesio Oseguero Cervantez known as "El Mencho".

And, in fact the Immigration and Customs Enforcement or Ice Facebook page has just an hour ago posted, quote, "Criminal alien Benigno Loria of Belize, a confirmed member of recently killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes' Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was arrested at-large by ICE Houston last week. Loria was arrested based on his 2024 final removal order, open arrest warrant and gang affiliation. He'll remain in custody pending deportation."

But today his mother, Edith Guy told us that her son fled to the US in 2023, after the Pueblo Nuevo Ferry shooting in Corozal and was offered asylum.

She says he was detained earlier this month but his wife and son were not. And she insists he will be released in a few days.

But, the most important thing she wanted to stress was that he had nothing to do with El Mencho's cartel. She said he was actually linked to another cartel:

Jules Vasquez
"Your son get caught up in a couple of things before he left Belize, obviously the more serious one was the one at the ferry but uhm, but was your son involved with people who link with the cartel here in Belize?"

Edith Guy, Mother of Benigno Loria
"The thing is that yes my son was with the cartel them but the cartel that they are accusing him, this mencho, that wasn't, that wasn't the boss, he wasn't working for that cartel, he didn't have anything to do with that cartel, it was another cartel that's name Caborca he was working for, but at that time yes he had a lot of people linking up."

Reporter
"So you are saying that your son is innocent?"

Edith Guy, Mother of Benigno Loria
"Yes he Is innocent, he noh have nothing to do with that what they are saying, the only thing they have him there is for the papers. That's all they have him there for the papers but to that with the cartel, he doesn't have nothing. They didn't even mention nothing to him about that what they are putting up."

"He went to the states couple days after he went through asylum, yeah he gone to the states, he gone through asylum that's what he has, and he already have two court action for their papers that's the one left, so they told him that they're not denying him to come back."

So while his mother says he will not be deported, based on information posted on the Ice Facebook page - things seem to be going in the other direction. But, we will follow the story to see how it develops.
