The Financial Intelligence Unit has issued a public advisory warning Belizeans about fraudulent emails being circulated by individuals impersonating staff from the agency. The FIU says the scam messages are designed to appear legitimate, using staff names, titles, logos, signatures, and even email addresses that may seem to originate from the unit. According to the advisory, some of the emails reference loan approvals, financial assistance, payments, and requests for banking information, despite the FIU making clear that it does not grant loans, process financial transactions, or request sensitive personal details through unsolicited emails. The public is being urged not to respond, click any links, or share personal or financial information, and to report suspicious emails directly to the FIU while contacting their bank and authorities if they may have already been affected.
