In the immortal words of Belize's southern songstress, "who said creole no have no culture?" well after the ardous work put into dispelling that myth by the likes of Sylvana Woods, Myrna Manzanarez and Lila Vernon? well not much people can make the claim of creole's cultural indifference. Still, it often gets lost in the maze of North American popular culture, and today in an effort to bring Creole to the forefront, the house of culture in Belize city organized a Creole Day that looked at the Creole culture, everything from the games right down to the local wines were on display:
Phillis Butler -Organizer
"Today we are celebrating our Creole culture, our traditions, we have food, creole music, creole games, creole arts and craft, creole books, displays and music. We are just celebrating our traditions."
"It is important for us to know and continue to practice our tradition especially for the young children. Our youths are the main people in our society that we need to keep them informed, keep them educated.
Sylvana Woods - Creole Proponent
" This is the Creole culture. What is culture? Culture is that which endures. That is what culture is. Like what is a culture? It's what your grandmother, grandfather and their ancestors used to do and it was passed on to you. It's your lifestyle. So this is the true Creole culture, whether it is the cold pot where you can trace back and that you can see now or whether it is the dynamic thing that culture is that it changes. So we have both the old time culture and some of the influences that affect the culture. So yes without a single doubt this is Creole culture.".
