Cayo is 100 years old and the twin towns of Santa Elena and San Ignacio rang in their centennial anniversary with a birthday bash last night. There were fireworks, an address by native son Prime Minister Hon. Said Musa, and a serenade by the reigning Miss Cayo. Here are some highlights courtesy the Government Press Office.

Hon. Said Musa, Prime Minister
“Cayo has been populated with Maya Belizeans, Mestizo Belizeans, Creole Belizeans, East Indian Belizeans, and Garifuna Belizeans all right down to today when you have your English, Americans, Mennonites and everyone in Cayo. And everybody is living in peace and harmony. So Cayo is a microcosm of what is great about Belize.”

“I stand here tonight as a proud son of El Cayo. I am very proud to have been born in this district.”

The activities continued today with the unveiling of a centennial plaque by Prime Minister Hon. Said Musa. For the centennial celebrations NICH today opened an exhibit on one hundred years of El Cayo's history. The exhibition is being held at the San Ignacio Cultural Center and runs through to Friday.
