Under the theme "inclusion: embracing differences, uniting strengths this week is being celebrated as Disabilities Week. As part of the celebrations today the community agency for the rehabilitation and education for persons with disabilities gathered all organization working with people with disabilities under one roof and held an open house for the general public to become more aware of the services they provide.
"What we have here is just all the services available for people with special needs within Belize City. We have CARE Belize, that's a rehabilitation agency for children from zero to six. We have special ed who offer, I think they have a program where parents go into schools and train teachers how to work with disabled children. we also have BCVI, we all know they work with people who are blind and they are offering free eye tests. We have Universal doing blood type tests and we have ACE, they have a special program for alternative education for people with special needs. And we also have to highlight the YWCA because they have students like Cassie who work in the cosmetology department. They take children from Stella Maris and they train them for a trade. We find it necessary because a lot of people in Belize are unaware of these services. Normally what people do is they would just go to KHMH and that's it but there are alternative things you can do. Like we have alternative health, Miss Karen Diaz, she performs alternative health for disabled children who have problems digesting their food. So its a way for us to make the public aware of these services that are offered because a lot of them they don't really know about it."
Next on the agenda for Disabilities Week will be the Finger Bee to be held tomorrow at the Belize Elementary School Auditorium.
