Just before primary schools closed for the Christmas break, 150 children from across Belize City were issued tickets. Today, those tickets were used to get free toys and treats from the Red Cross. It's an annual tradition going back 16 years and focuses on students who may have not received presents because their families simply could not afford it. 7NEWS caught up with some very special guests of honor at St. Mary's School where we found the children in high spirits.

Adela Parra, Coordinator - Red Cross Christmas Party
"There are less fortunate children that are out there that will not be able to get a toy sow e decided that it was time for the Red Cross to give. We know that Red Cross gives all the time right but at this special occasion we would like to give a little bit more. We normally send tickets to the principal and then they do the selection and then it is from all around Belize. "

The Christmas party coordinator, Adela Parra says each year concerned Belizeans living in Miami purchase the gifts that are handed out to the children. Para says without the international support, local assistance from volunteers, executive members and friends of the Red Cross it would be hard for them to meet their annual commitment.
