The third annual Lik It Poetry Festival will be held tomorrow night at the Bliss Center. Like the name “Lik It” implies, the poems should be forceful enough to shake up the staid settings they are recited in. And according to organizer Kalilah Enriquez, that’s why we should care.

Kalilah Enriquez, Coordinator
“Poetry makes the world flourish, poetry makes things beautiful, and poetry is life. That is why you should care.”

Jules Vasquez,
I think it was W.H. Arden who said poetry changes nothing. Is this art for art’s sake?

Kalilah Enriquez,
“What is wrong with art for art’s sake? Actually poetry does change some things. It has the ability to infect people’s minds, to get people to express their opinions and to get people to a certain stage. I am sure you remember last year there was a poem by Ruth Reneau called, Why I Protest, and that was in the heat of a protest action time when people were really riled up about a certain issue or several certain issues as a matter of fact. And so things like that get people to really think about the deeper issues. If you haven’t been thinking about it yet, when somebody is able to summarize a sentiment as beautifully as Ruth Reneau could have summarized that sentiment last year May, then it lends to a great expression, it lends to a great expression, it lends to a great ability for people to come together and to think she has a point, maybe we should be doing something and maybe we should be protesting maybe we should listen to the reason why Ruth Reneau protested and by poets write. Poets are some of the most controversial figures, in fact not only in Belize but around the world. Belizeans do tend to be a bit conservative and so we want to hear people say the things that you wish you could always say, come to Lik It on Saturday night.”

The festival starts tomorrow night at 7:30.
